The Family

Portraits Duval Leroy

Carol Duval-Leroy took over the family business when her husband, Jean Charles, passed away in 1991. As the Chairman & Chief Executive of Champagne Duval-Leroy, she has fulfilled the promise she made to retain the business in the family so she can one day pass it on to her children. The winery’s success in her tenure has far exceeded her expectations. She is especially proud that Duval-Leroy remains one of the last family-owned Champagne houses and that her three sons work with her.

Carol had once dreamed of becoming a chef, and her appreciation for and understanding of the relationship between great wine and food has been instrumental in growing Duval-Leroy’s restaurant presence, with placements in more than 250 Michelin starred restaurants. She has also helped to vastly expand the brand’s exports, and Duval-Leroy is enjoyed in more than 80 countries. Established among sommeliers and connoisseurs, Carol’s continuing ambition is to make Duval-Leroy known to everyone.

She is a steadfast supporter sustainable development – she frequently says that we borrow the Earth from our children. Low-impact viticulture practices at Duval-Leroy evolved far before it become mandatory in Champagne. In addition, Carol made Duval-Leroy a pioneer in sustainable operations with the installation of solar panels, the creation of green walls and the reuse of rain water. Her commitment in this regard has been honored with numerous awards.

In 2007, Carol was chosen by Champagne professionals to become the first woman to serve as president of the Comité Interprofessionnel du vin de Champagne/CIVC (Wine Association of the Champagne region).

As a food enthusiast and an excellent cook, Carol’s only regret is not to manage a Michelin starred restaurants!

Julien Duval-Leroy joined the family business in 2010 as General Manager. With his brothers Charles and Louis, he is the sixth generation of Duval-Leroy involved in the company. He is in charge of human resources, the legal department, investment programs and supply contracts. Duval-Leroy takes advantage of prized family vineyards, but also sources grapes, and Julien is focused on developing long-lasting relationships with quality growers. Following the trend taken by his predecessors, he puts the emphasis on quality over quantity, buying Premier and Grand Crus grapes.

After several years of tastings and getting to know the vineyard, Julien has also joined the tasting committee at Duval-Leroy to elaborate the cuvees.  He is also an ambassador for the brand in France and abroad.

A wine and food enthusiast, Julien is eager to discover wineries from all over the world.

Prior to Duval-Leroy, Julien worked as an analyst in international affairs, both in the United States and in France. He holds a master’s degree in International Affairs from the Institute of World Politics, Washington DC. He is married and a proud father of Alexandre.

Charles Duval-Leroy heads up Marketing & Communications functions at Champagne Duval-Leroy.

Born in 1984, Charles grew up, with his brothers, in the heart of the vineyards. His elementary school was located within the Clos des Bouveries and as children the boys would ride bicycles throughout the Côte des Blancs. After a year in aeronautical school to pursue his passion for cars, Charles turns to business school and moves to Paris. He started his marketing career by working with a wide range of high-end clients such as the Ministry of Agriculture, the Automobile Club de France and Petrossian restaurant in Monaco.

Charles thrives in his current role and loves sharing what makes Champagne Duval-Leroy unique.

In his free time, Charles travels the world to discover different cultures and culinary delights, and particularly enjoys visting World Heritage sites.

Louis Duval-Leroy joined the family business in 2012 and is in charge of Public Relations. Louis, who graduated from business school in Paris, travels widely in France and is in constant contact with chefs and sommeliers, sharing Duval-Leroy. He also visits wine shops and represents Duval-Leroy at tastings and many other events. He oversees Duval-Leroy’s “Grandes Tables du Monde” Champagne diner tour every year. Pleasant and relaxed, a tasting with Louis is always a joy and often ends with a cigar.

Besides Champagne, Louis has a passion for food and golf.
